There’s no need to be shy or intimidated when you walk into your first class—or your fiftieth class for that matter. Zumba-goers come in all ages, shapes and sizes and most have little-to-no dance training. You’ll have a blast trying to keep up with the steps and swinging your hips to the beat with the rest of the class. Everyone’s there to have a good time. The face that you get a fabulous workout? That’s just an added bonus.
The music and moves are mostly Latin-inspired, but some instructors throw in other types of music like pop, rap, Jamaican—basically anything you can move to! There are traditional Zumba songs and moves that you’ll recognize with every instructor, but many of them choose their own upbeat songs and exciting moves. It can be a little difficult to catch on in the beginning, especially because the instructor is quiet for the most part and signals move changes with hand signals. However, if you start going to the same class week after week, the songs will likely be the same and so will the dance moves. Your body will remember quickly, especially because the moves match the songs.
If you’re not able to make it out to an organized class in a gym or other studio, there are plenty of other ways to get your Zumba on. DVD workouts, original music collections and video games are all available for you to join the party at home!
Grab your water bottle, towel, clothes you can move in and some comfortable shoes and get ready to dance!
